Rivers State House of Assembly crisis: court sets new date

by samsunblog

The Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has set a hearing date for Edison Ehie, the factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

After Governor Siminialayi Fubara was impeached by Martin Amaewhule and 23 other legislators, Ehie was elected Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly.

In order to prevent Amaewhule from posing as Speaker or in charge of the House’s operations, he brought legal action.

The parties were previously directed by the court to keep things as they were while Ehie’s lawsuit was heard and decided. Later, Ehie filed a contempt lawsuit against Amaewhule, claiming that his group had carried out a legislative activities in defiance of the court directive.

The privilege to defend Ehie in the case caused a fight between two attorneys. N.O. Akporuvweku, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, claimed that he had not received any notice of the change in counsel, therefore, K.C.O. Njemanze, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was brought in to take over. The case was postponed until December 5 by Justice Phoebe Ayua so that the parties could serve one another with legal documents and Ehie’s attorneys could resume their regular appearance.
