According to US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Repulican investigations into the President’s and his family’s financial connections have led to a “natural step forward” of an impeachment into US President Joe Biden.
Republicans claim that the Justice department treated the Biden family differently in its probe into the president’s son Hunter Biden, and that members of the Biden family received payments from foreign businesses.
Due to rising internal GOP tensions, the party to defer a vote on an impeachment resolution sponsored by Rep. Lauren Boerbert, R-Colo., and instead refer it to the Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees in June.
According to McCarthy, an impeachment investigation would give Congress absolute authority to obtain all the facts they require.
McCarthy’s comments were criticized by White House spokesman Ian Sams as a “crazy exercise” motivated by partisan smugness.
McCarthy said that if the administration doesn’t disclose the records Republicans want to see, the House, which is controlled by Republicans, will be closer to opening an impeachment investigation.
He didn’t say which Biden’s family member’s bank and credit card statements the Republicans were after though, federal officials are also looking into Hunter Biden for possible tax and weapons violations, independent of the GOP-led investigations.
In charge of serving as special counsel in the ongoing investigation of the president’s son is U.S. Attorney David Weiss.
