McDonald’s restaurants encountered a global IT system breakdown that resulted in restaurant closures and global interruptions to online and app orders.
The problem was created by a third-party provider during a configuration change, not by a cybersecurity incident.
Numerous markets were impacted by the outage, including those in the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and the United States.
In the UK, employees had to personally receive orders and give instructions to their kitchen colleagues.
McDonald’s restaurants in Australia stated that the outage had an impact on all of their restaurants across the country.
Taiwan and Hong Kong were also mentioned as having issues.
McDonald’s restaurants in Hong Kong announced on Facebook that self-ordering kiosks and smartphone ordering had been unavailable owing to a computer system malfunction, but that operations had already resumed.
The McDelivery service of the fast food restaurant in Taiwan announced on its website that online and phone ordering services are temporarily paused while system maintainance is performed.
McDonald’s operates more than 41,800 locations globally, with United States accounting for over 13,500 of those locations.
